Candle Care

  • Our candles are shaped through physical processes, and burning sets those processes back into motion. Every piece behaves differently. Melt patterns shift, forms collapse, and wax flows in unexpected ways. This unpredictability is part of the work.

    Before you light it

    Choose the right surface:
These candles burn cleanly wax-wise, but the melt can travel far from the base. Always place the candle on a large, fully non-flammable, heat-resistant surface. A wide ceramic plate, metal tray, or stone tile is essential. A coaster is not enough.

    Trim the wick:
Trim to approximately 5mm before lighting. This helps reduce excess flame height and slows the initial melt.

    Keep away from direct heat:
Do not place near heaters, radiators, or warm windowsills. The form may soften or distort before it's even lit.

    During the Burn

    The burn is not symmetrical:
The wax will move according to heat, shape, and internal structure. Expect slumping, tilting, widening melt pools, and irregular flow. This is the object shifting back into motion.

    Managing wax flow (optional):
You can slow or redirect the movement:

    • Extinguish the flame
    • Allow the wax to cool slightly
    • Gently press or plug a cascade with solidified wax from the edges

This can prolong the burn, but it works against the candle’s natural behaviour. The piece is designed to move.

    Burn sessions

Shorter sessions help maintain stability. Long burns create large pools and faster collapses. Never leave the candle burning unattended.

    Stop early:
Once the wick reaches the final third of the form, the structure can become unstable. Extinguish before it reaches the base.

    After Burning

    Wax bloom:
A soft white bloom can form on the surface over time. This is a natural feature of the wax. You can remove it by:

    • Warming lightly with a hairdryer on low
    • Placing the candle in indirect sunlight for a short period.

Avoid direct sun or high heat for too long. The candle may soften or melt.

    Cleaning the tray or plate:
Once the wax cools, it can be lifted off most surfaces. Warm water and a blunt scraper will remove residue from metal or ceramic.

Why We Don’t List Burn Times

Every form is different, and every burn is different. Estimating a burn time would be inaccurate, and burn duration isn’t the focus. These objects are not designed to perform like uniform pillar candles — they are designed to change.

    General Candle Safety

    • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
    • Keep away from children and pets.
    • Do not burn near flammable materials.
    • Keep away from drafts.
    • Do not burn for more than 2 hours at a time.
    • Always burn on a wide, stable, non-flammable surface.
    • Keep matches and debris out of the melt pool.
    • Extinguish fully before moving the candle.

    Keeping the Form Intact

These candles can be kept unlit as sculptural objects. Once burned, the form will change permanently.
